A Boxer dog was dumped by cruel owners immediately after it was no longer capable to breed.
Boxer Eve was left to starve after being left behind in a bog near Athboy in Co Meath, Ireland, just after Christmas.
The Last Hope Charity dog rescue was called after Eve made her way to a farmyard next to Bohermeen bog.
Volunteer Rachel Farrelly said: “We realised she was emaciated. Her spine is protruding, it is almost curved because she is used to gathering herself in because it is cold.
“Her ribs are also protruding and her skull points up in a kind of a cone which shows how thin she is.
“We would say she was used for breeding – there are obvious signs from her that she was feeding litters of pups. It is quite likely when she reached an age that she couldn’t breed anymore they would get rid of her.”
Regardless of her experience Eve, who is about 9 years old, has a gentle nature and shows no signs of aggression.
Last Hope founder Hilary Bartley added: “It would have taken months of starvation for Eve to get to this state.”
She explained that while the charity was happy to get foster homes for all its dogs over the holidays, the continuous stream of abandoned pets meant all the kennels were full by New Year’s Eve before the fostered dogs came back.
And she warned they are also seeing an increase in abuse cases.
Hilary said: “I can see people not being able to cope but when dogs are beaten, starved etc. If you can’t look after a dog, then don’t have one.”
